Netiquette
Take polite interaction to heart
We welcome lively participation from everyone on our social media platforms. However, even with heated topics and discussions: The forms of politeness and rules of conduct that you would observe in a face-to-face conversation must also be upheld on the social web. This means a polite and objective tone instead of rudeness.
Also, pay attention to wording and spelling. Base your opinion on testable arguments, not generalisations. Make sure you have understood the context correctly, as the absence of facial expressions and gestures in communication can easily lead to misunderstandings.
Respect applicable laws and social norms
Insults, provocations, defamation of character, racism and discrimination have no place on our social media platforms. All posts that violate applicable laws are of course prohibited and we will report them to the police. Before posting, consider whether you could also represent your post in retrospect. This also applies to sharing other people’s content. This is the only way to maintain a culture of open and fair discussion that benefits us all.
Post relevant posts
Make sure your posts are relevant: Create and comment on posts in appropriate places with appropriate relevance to the topic or group. Include unique profile names and topic references. This is the only way that they can be easily found afterwards and also be taken up again at a later time. If you have private problems with other users, do not discuss them in the public area of the social media platforms of the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance.
Observe copyright when using third-party content
Observe copyright law when using third-party content such as images, texts and other media. Follow the laws that exist in Germany: For example, the right to one’s own image and the copyright for songs, articles and programmes apply. In Germany, a work is protected for 70 years after the death of the author, after which it can be used freely. When using third-party content, always state the author and the source or the link to the website. If in doubt, ask the owner of the website whether you are allowed to use the content. Even with Creative Commons licences, you must state the author and source.
Pay attention to security
Protect your user account with a secure password. Make sure your devices are adequately protected with an up-to-date anti-virus programme. This way you protect yourself from strangers gaining access to your account and posting content in your name. Therefore, when sharing other people’s content, make sure that it does not contain or spread viruses.
Respect the role of moderators
The moderators of the social media platforms of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance will be happy to help you with questions and suggestions. They also ensure compliance with netiquette in order to guarantee the smoothest possible exchange and to create a pleasant atmosphere. If the netiquette is not observed, the moderators reserve the right to edit or delete contributions in their entirety. In addition, the moderators may block a user’s account in the event of repeated non-compliance.
